Fort Wayne Firefighters Museum History

The Fort Wayne Firefighters Museum, Inc. was established on April 20, 1974, two years after the city of Fort Wayne decommissioned Fire Station #3 in the city’s downtown. Their collection began in 1975, when they took over the building’s lease from the city. The painting and rebuilding process officially began in 1979. On April 8, 1987, the Museum received the deed to the building from the City.

On a limited basis, the Museum ultimately opened in 1981. The display space was renovated three more times, in 1998, 2009, and 2019. In 2001, a staff was employed and regular hours were instituted so that visitors may take in the museum’s history.

More than 90 percent of the museum’s exhibits were formerly utilized by the city’s firefighting department. Firefighters and their families who no longer work in the fire service have donated many of these artifacts to the Museum so that future generations would have an appreciation for just how far the fire service has come in the past 150 years.
