Driving from the Olentangy Indian Caverns, I stopped by a roadside attraction in Dublin, Ohio. I was so intrigued by photos I saw online about the Field of Corn that I thought this stop will be worth the while.

It was a short drive, about 25 minutes. Located in the intersection of Frantz Road and Rings Road, the Field of Giant Corn Cobs is hard to miss. I entered Rings Road and immediately looked for a parking space. Unfortunately, this site didn’t have its own parking lot so I had to drive around it to find one. Since it was a weekend, I parked in an empty roundabout, probably owned by those corporate offices surrounding the site.

It was odd seeing the Field of Corn located in such a suburban neighborhood. I was expecting it to be surrounded by real corn fields. Oh well, the site was not huge. From where I parked, it was not even impressive to see. The field looked like a memorial site.

I was the only one there at that time. Isn’t the Field of Corn not attractive enough for tourists? I walked through the art installation of precast concrete ears of corn cobs erected in straight rows. According to the Dublin Arts Council, there are 109 of these corn cobs.

What’s the story behind its construction? Dublin Arts Council writes: “Field of Corn stands in a highly visible field that was once farmed by Sam Frantz, a leader in the use of hybridized corn. Frantz’s widow, Eulalia Frantz, attended the dedication of the sculpture, with their daughter and son. With support of the Dublin Historical Society, the site has now been named Frantz Park.” The site was dedicated October 30, 1994.

Will I recommend the site? For those passing through Dublin Ohio, stop by it, take photos, and leave. But for those wanting to see this site alone, it may not be worth the trip. You can be done here in 10 minutes or less.

Interesting facts.

– Each corn sculpture stands 6 ft. 3 in. (1.9 m).

– Each corn sculpture weighs 1500 lbs. (680 kg).

– There were only three full-sized prototypes used to create all the cobs.

– The depth of the foundation for each ear is a 3 ft. (0.9 m).
