More than a hundred years ago, the Wright Brothers, Wilbur and Orville, ran a bicycle and printing business inside this building (pictured above) from 1895 to 1897. This was the fourth bicycle shops that the Wright brothers operated and the only one still open to the public today.

When Wilbur and Orville moved to Dayton, Ohio in 1895, they had been in the bicycle business for only two years. In that short period of time, they had built up a solid reputation as mechanics who sold quality bicycles. If that was not enough, the brothers also ran a print shop on the second floor. They were known for their mechanical wizardry for the printing presses they had built.

The Wright brothers also began to think about the problem of human flight while they worked as mechanics. Their shared businesses allowed them to hone both their mechanical skills and their intuitive ways of working together.

The brothers designed their own engine to power the line shaft of their bicycle business. It was their first engine and, unknown to them at that time, provided experience that they would use to build their aircraft engine in 1903.
