To commemorate the battle of Point Pleasant, West Virginia, the Battle Monument was erected in the year 1909. The battle occurred at the mouth of the Great Kanawha River on October 10, 1774, between Virginia colonial troops and the warriors from the United Indian Nations (Shawness, Delawares, Mincoes, Wyandottes, Miamis, and Ottawas). The battle was the most important battle ever waged between the forces of civilization and of barbarism in America.
