Johnny was the son of a cobbler. He died when he fell into the Miami and Erie Canal while playing with his dog. His dog tried to save him, but failed to do so. Then Johnny drowned and was buried at the Woodland Cemetery. According to witnesses, the dog stayed at Johnny’s grave for weeks waiting for Johnny to come back.

In the end, the dog died at Johnny’s grave.

Johnny’s headstone depicts a little boy cradled by his dog. The stone was made in 1861 to commemorate Johnny’s devotion to his dog.
