The year 2019 was the 50th anniversary of Neil Armstrong’s moon landing (yes, that was 1969)! I had been planning to visit this museum after I read an article online about its story. And finally, in October 2019, I got to see what Armstrong Air and Space Museum has to offer.

It is located in Wapakoneta, Ohio, the hometown of Armstrong. Neil was present when the museum was opened in 1972 in honor of his historic achievement.

From afar, the museum is not impressive. In fact, it is hardly seen because it is somehow buried in a mound. Without the sign that says its name, I would have not known that there is a building in there.

However, the moment you enter the door, a walkway that is dim-lit awaits you. Immediately, you will be bombarded by series of images on space explorations.

As you continue your way, you will see many artifacts on display related to Neil Armstrong and his trip to the moon.

While it is easy to follow the exhibits and see each item without missing anything, I would suggest that you talk to the staff at the welcome counter and ask for a printed guide.

Yes, the museum contains a real Gemini space capsule!

As I said, it is easy to follow the flow of the exhibits. The layout of the museum is somewhat circular. So if you follow a clockwise direction, eventually, you will end up to where you started — which is good!

There are tons of news clippings about that day Armstrong landed on the moon. I find it fascinating, personally. I could just imagine the jubilant atmosphere that moment when it was announced that “a man is now on the moon!”

Along the middle of your tour inside, there is a short film presentation on America’s race to the moon. This is very informative, so take a seat and learn something.

On your way to the end is the gift shop.
