The Sunwatch Indian Village located in Dayton, Ohio has been designated as a National Historic Landmark.  It had been occupied during the 12th century by Fort Ancient Indians for about 20 years.

Around 700 years ago, there was a prehistoric Native American village on this spot! It has a large plaza at the center that measures about 200 feet in diameter. The villagers kept the plaza clean and clear of obstructions. The social and ceremonial life of the village, like rituals and games, were played in this space.

The village was completely enclosed by a wooden stockade. Archaeologists could not agree whether the stockade was for defense or for keeping wild animals away from stored food.

The people at the Sunwatch Indian Village were part of what is known as the “Fort Ancient” culture.

Fort Ancient people chose this area because of its fertile soil and also located near the Great Miami River — a source of water.

The Fort Ancient people were Ohio’s first true farmers. They planted corn, beans, squash, etc.  They are not recognized as “Moundbuilders.” The term is used to refer to the Adena and Hopewell cultures.  The Adena and Hopewell lived much earlier in time than the Fort Ancient.

This is the largest structure in the village, used for community events.

These poles at the center of the village were used in astronomical alignments for telling equinoxes and seasons of planting and harvest.

The villagers spent more time outside than inside their houses, since these dwellings were dark, smoky, and crowded.

Native people have lived in Ohio for at least 11,000 years and this culture represents some of the last people to live in Ohio prior to contact with European invaders.

It is not clear when the site was abandoned, but it is likely no later than the early 1400s.
