If you want to visit some State Parks near St. Louis Missouri, you might be limited in options. Most State Parks are located at least an hour away from the city center. But there is one that might excite you — the Castlewood State Park! This free park is about 30-minute drive from the Gateway Arch and a short 25-minute drive from Saint Louis Art Museum. When I visited this park around end of January, I thought I would not enjoy it since it was in the middle of winter when everything looks dull and dark. However, I was surprised to know that the park still has a lot to offer for visitors even on winter season. In fact, it was a little crowded on a Sunday afternoon to the point that it was hard to find space for parking.

One activity that I liked the most was walking along the Meramec River. Trails offered some scenic views.

A few trails could get a little rough at times, hiking on the cliffs. But when you get to the top, the views are worth the climb.

If you visit, stay ’til sunset.

I am planning to visit this park again on a summer! Or maybe on Fall when leaves turn colorful.
