29 Nov

The recent Maguindanao Massacre in the Philippines claimed 30 people from the media alone. These men were brutally killed last Monday November 23, while doing their jobs as active journalists on the field.

I salute these men and women and my heart goes to the families left behind.

Oklahoma City Bombing Tapes, Released

27 Sep

Jesse Trentadue, a Salt Lake City attorney, has obtained a copy of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing video tapes through the federal Freedom of Information Act. The video is now posted online.

If you watch the video, something is actually lacking. The video shows events minutes long before the blast and then goes blank before 9:02 a.m., when a truck bomb carrying a 4,000 pound fertilizer-and-fuel-oil bomb detonated in front of the Oklahoma City federal building. Where are the rest of the video? Why are they missing? There were four cameras monitoring the place at different locations and all of them coincidentally went blank at the same time! Coincidence. Really? Maybe not.

Death compels one to deal with the profoundness of life

I thought it would be timely to write about death. A lot of crying has been covered lately on TV and prints for the death of over thirty students at Virginia Tech. In the Philippines, the list of journalists being killed is growing and leaving pictures of families left behind wailing in grief. There was this news about an innocent 2-year old child that was hit by a stray bullet while sleeping in the comfort of his room. Yes, in this column, I will be detailing a chronicle of death. Unless you are not afraid of the word, stop reading.

Few years ago, the surprising death of my young professor in law school made my classmates and I realized our own vulnerabilities. He was just as strong as anyone else the day before he died, laughing and throwing his daily punch lines in class and even joked about health. Little did we know that he’d die the next day. His passing confirmed the verity of how susceptible anyone is to death.
