Boss Pizza and Chicken in Brookings Can Stop Your Heart

5 Mar

The title refers to the 4-piece chicken I ordered last night at Boss Pizza and Chicken in Brookings. Having tried different chicken recipes all my life and, the fact that I came from a “chicken-eating” country, I had high expectation that my order will be served perfectly seasoned, hot and crisp, and with a twist. The chicken came hot, but overly fried. It stayed too long in the deep fryer that I could even smell the burning aroma.

Walmart Selling Expired Florida Natural Orange Juice

10 Aug

Walmart in Brookings South Dakota is selling expired orange juice. I was in Walmart today to buy a gallon of Minute Maid juice (my favorite is the one with pulp). While searching for it along a line of glass coolers, I saw another brand of juice displayed: Florida’s Natural Orange Juice (see picture below). I wasn’t intending to purchase one, but what caught my attention was the expiration date printed clearly on its side — August 2, 2010.

Since I always look at the date when purchasing perishable products, I was shocked that Walmart is displaying the juice, 8 days beyond the expiration. And it was not just one, but many of them inside the cooler!

Rattan Fruit or Littuko

10 Jul

I was having my daily news reading on philstar.com when the picture (below) of a man gathering rattan fruits, locally known as littuko, caught my attention. I had seen the fruits before in the Philippines, but never thought that it’s from the rattan tree, more so, that it could actually be eaten. The snakelike rattan fruit is small, about 1.5 inch in diameter.

According to those who have tasted the fruit, it is sour, akin to a tamarind taste.

Chocomangrous Recipe – Choco and Mango Sweets

31 Dec

My housemate and I were experimenting on the sweet mangoes we had on our table and came up with an idea of turning the mangoes into a sweet, tasty dessert. We took some milk, pour in some sugar and chocolate bars and peanuts and, voila, the Chocomangrous sweets were made! Alright, alright, it was not that easy. The Chocomangrous recipe involves 3 parts and I will detail the steps below.

Chocomangrous is our way of combining chocolate and mango together. Since we love the taste of the final product so much, we want the name of our new sweet discovery to be massive, so we added the suffix ‘rous’ – like the word monstrous. In other words, we wanted the name to sound a bit unique. There you go — Chocomangrous!

Sparboe Farms Eggs and Dwarfy

19 Oct

I just bought a box of jumbo-size Sparboe Farms eggs at Walmart. Surprise, surprise! When I arrived home and opened the box, a bitsy teeny weenie small white egg made my jaw drop — a non-jumbo egg in a jumbo box of Sparboe Farms eggs!

It was probably a mistake. Or maybe someone from Walmart store (employee/customer) did a stupid joke to exchange the egg.
