The National African-American Museum and Cultural Center is located next to Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio. It is a small museum mission that showcases the stories of African Americans from their African origins to the current day.

When I visited the museum, the main gallery area was closed and only the John Fleming gallery was opened. Because of that there wasn’t much to see in the museum — I was out of the building in half an hour. There are, however, some pieces that I want to highlight in this post…

Stove and Toaster

This gas stove made by Cleveland Cooperative Stove Company, would have been used to cook meals with limited ingredients due to rationing.

Register of Blacks and Mulattos

In 1804, Ohip passed a legislation requiring all freed Blacks to register their freed papers with the Clerk of Courts in the county in which they resided. Their names are in this book to prove their emancipated status.

The National Afro-American Museum is open 4 times a week (Friday, Saturday, Wednesday, Thursday) from 9AM–4PM. It is closed on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday.
